Like most teenage boys I didn’t really know what I wanted to do when I left school. So after completing a weeks’ work experience in the jewellery industry and getting my first glimpse of spinning, I was hooked!
I served a five year apprenticeship and became a “Freeman of the City of London” back in 1996, and have been in the industry ever since. Over the years I’ve worked in different environments, with different mentors and they have all contributed to the knowledge and skills I have today.
There is always something new to learn, which is what makes my job so interesting.
In 2008 I decided I would do it alone and haven’t looked back since.
I love my job, and I get to work on some amazing stuff, including some of the world’s most prestigious sporting trophies - which is a real treat for me as I love sport.
So alongside trying to grow my company, I also want to give something back to ensure the future of the industry and so, I have taken on an apprentice via The Goldsmiths Company.
I also pop up to the Goldsmiths Centre and do the odd bit of teaching for silver spinning to their “Foundation Students” - hopeful that someone else may fall in love with it as I did many moons ago.
I am lucky to say I love my job, no two days are ever the same, and I always look forward to my next big project.
I have great relationships with my clients and suppliers alike, and it’s lovely to work in an industry where most appreciate the work you do.

I have always been quite a creative person and loved metalwork at school.
My teacher realised that I have a natural ability working with metal, and introduced me to the Goldsmiths Centre to continue my studies.
Whilst in my foundation year, I did 2 weeks work experience learning silver spinning at Stuart Ray Ltd and decided that I really enjoyed it. So I was really happy when I was offered an apprenticeship there.
I’m enjoying my apprenticeship, as not only do I get to learn, but I earn money whilst doing it!
I am the first apprentice silver spinner through the Goldsmiths Company since my boss Stuart.
We are a rare breed these days!
Working for a small company is great, as I get to learn different areas, including smithing and polishing. It’s always quite satisfying to see an item start off as a flat piece of silver, and take shape into something totally amazing.
Every day is different, which is great. I am also pretty good at the CAD side of things and have been able to teach Stuart a thing or two, and have introduced some 3D printing to the workshop as this is a hobby of mine.
It’s been nice to be able to use some modern techniques, and great that Stuart has let me showcase my skills. I look forward to completing my apprenticeship in a couple of years, and am excited to see what the future holds for me.
